I’ve been reading stories the past couple days about Steven Kazmierczak, the former student who purchased guns before killing five people and himself at Northern Illinois University on Thursday. How was this guy able to buy guns legally since he had been on psychiatric medications? Can someone with a psychiatric history purchase weapons as long as they don’t have any criminal convictions? Or did this guy lie on his application? The stories I’ve seen seemed to indicate that he bought the guns legally.

I’m going into grade 12, and coming up to University application time. The only thing is, I have no clue how university works, and the guidance counselors at my school don’t have the time to sit down with me and explain things to me, so I don’t know what a mastors, major, minor, bachelor, undergraduate, or anything means.

I’m curious how creative writing instructors at colleges and universities handle students who write about really disturbing things and who seem potentially dangerous to themselves and others? Are instructors privy to students’ mental health records? Do they let such students get away with violent or disturbing writing in an effort NOT to stir too much trouble? Do you become proactive in trying to help these students? Do you undergo training to deal with problem students? As a creative writing student at a university, I often see disturbing stuff brought into workshops. I’m wondering what the profs think of all this. Thanks to any answers!
